If you’ve driven around Bloomington-Normal this winter, you already know the vibe: salt, potholes, slush, and those wild temperature swings . The good news? A few quick spring check-ins can help your vehicle run smoother, last longer, and avoid those “wait…what’s that noise?” moments.

Here’s a simple spring car maintenance checklist you can use right now 

1) Wash off winter salt (yes, including the undercarriage) 

Road salt can speed up corrosion—especially underneath your vehicle where you can’t easily see it. A good wash (with an undercarriage rinse) helps remove buildup and protects important components.

2) Check your tires for wear and pressure 

Cold weather can drop tire pressure, and winter potholes can cause damage you might not notice right away.

• Look for uneven tread wear
• Check for sidewall bubbles or cracks
• Set pressure to the recommended PSI (found on the driver door jamb)

If your tires are wearing unevenly, it may be time for an alignment.

3) Inspect brakes (winter is hard on them) 

Stop-and-go driving, slick roads, and salt exposure can accelerate brake wear. If you hear squealing, grinding, or feel vibration while braking, get it checked sooner rather than later.

4) Replace wiper blades and top off washer fluid 

Spring rain + leftover winter grime can wreck visibility. Fresh wipers are inexpensive and make a big difference.

5) Test your battery 

Batteries often weaken during winter. If your starts feel sluggish or your battery is 3+ years old, a quick battery test can prevent a “won’t start” morning.

6) Check fluids and look for leaks 

At minimum, check:

• Engine oil
• Coolant
• Brake fluid
• Transmission fluid (if applicable)
• Power steering fluid (if applicable)

If you notice spots in your driveway or a burning smell, it’s worth having a technician take a look.

7) Swap your cabin air filter 

A clogged cabin air filter can reduce airflow and make your HVAC work harder—especially during allergy season.

8) Consider an alignment after pothole season 

If your steering wheel pulls, your car drifts, or your tires are wearing oddly, an alignment can improve handling and help your tires last longer.
